The Grand Bulgarian Horo, organised by EPP/GERB MEP Eva Maydell and supported by EP President Antonio Tajani, took place for the fifth time in Brussel’s Central Square on 23rd April 2017.
‘The Grand Horo has already become an annual tradition for both the city of Brussels and the Balkan communities that live here. It is a dynamic reflection of European values and demonstrates the beauty of our continent’s different faces. Dancing a horo in the European capital is a way to show that the Bulgarian people are still very much in touch with their history and culture, while remaining open to the world beyond.’ said Eva Paunova in a speech to participants, audience members and tourists in the square.
Ms Maydell carries on the tradition founded by the former vice-president of the European Commission Kristalina Georgieva in 2014, this being the first year that the horo also enjoys the patronage of Mr Tajani. Also in attendance were the deputy mayor of Brussels Karine Lalieux, several Belgian politicians and the ambassadors to Belgium of Bulgaria and other Balkan countries.
Said Ms Maydell ‘I am happy that the citizens and guests of Brussels had the opportunity to enjoy the performances of the talented Bulgarian ‘Golden Thrace’ ensemble and the National Orchestra of the Bulgarian town of Haskovo.
The Grand Horo is part of the 11th annual Balkan Trafik festival, headlined by the legendary Goran Bregović.
